James McAleese

Head of Secondary

I consider myself fortunate to have experienced life abroad, as my father was in the Armed Forces for the first eighteen years of my life. I was educated in the UK and went on to read French at university - subsequently living and working in French Guiana and Quebec, Canada. In addition to French, I am also a fluent German speaker. After my PGCE at Homerton College, Cambridge, I was selected to complete the 3 year ‘Developing Leaders For Tomorrow’ Diploma run by Warwick University, Specialist Schools Trust and the Vision 2020 Group. This gave me an early insight into the complexities of schools as organisations and the requisite skills necessary to be a part of a successful team and to lead for positive change.

Leadership is a key area for any school or organisation and I focused on this for two years when I studied at Cambridge University for a Master's degree in Leading Teaching and Learning. Since then I have studied to be a Seesaw Global Ambassador and I am currently working towards becoming a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert. I have learned that a leader's skillset is always evolving; I believe that I am an ethical leader with a focus on communication, time management and high levels of adaptability and skill.

Since 2002 when I came into teaching, the use of technology has evolved and I am a huge advocate for the effective and timely use of digital learning. As an Assistant Headteacher in North London, one of my principle roles, alongside leading teaching and learning, was to bring Google Apps For Education into the school. I led on implementing the 'Bring Your Own Device' initiative for students and introduced GCSEPod to the school and led it to the coveted number one position in the UK for student usage within 7 months. All of this makes a school a very exciting place to work! As a previous form tutor, head of house, music and sports coach, I see the power of a well-rounded and engaging curriculum. A strong focus on extra-curricular activities complements academic work and I am delighted to have the opportunity to work within the GEMS family at Winchester School Fujairah on teaching, learning and innovation, and as Head of Secondary. The future here is very exciting with our shared vision and the potential of both our staff and students.
